Spring has come with some great warm weather!
We hope the spring season lasts a bit longer than several weeks this year and then brings a mild start to summer and some much needed rainfall to our region. Fingers crossed.
As your Councillor I have had the pleasure of attending a various number of functions over the past several weeks.
On VP Day (Victory in the Pacific), held on the 15th of August, we commemorated the end of World War 2 and those who sacrificed their lives so that we could lead good ones in a democratic country. The Ceremony was arranged by the Blackall Tambo Regional Council and held at the Cenotaph in Memorial Park. A small crowd attended and paid their respects to this significant event in Australian History.
The Anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan was on the 18th August and the Blackall RSL Sub Branch organised a Remembrance Service in Memorial Park to honour Australia’s commitment in the Vietnam War. This was well attended and students attended from the Blackall State School and St Joey’s as well.
It then was Seniors Week and what a week it was! The seniors in our community kept up a hectic pace for a week, culminating in the Seniors Fete in Banks Park on Saturday, 29th August. On Saturday night, a large number of people attended the Johny Cash and June Carter Cash concert. It was a sold out show and well done to all who performed.
Last week I also attended the Chappie Fundraising Lunch. This successful event was held in the grounds of the Blackall State School, under the shade of a large tree called the “Whipping Tree”. Several other Councillors attended as well. The catering students provided us with a mouth-watering two course meal so there is no reason for our shire to have a shortage of chefs in the future. 🙂 The Luncheon went off well with excellent customer service and great coffee served. The funds raised will be used to continue the great work of SU Chaplaincy.
Blackall State School also has a breakfast for students on every Thursday morning. I was able to observe the students arriving and eating a hearty breakfast, put on by the teachers. There should be no excuse now by the students not to concentrate in the class room after breakfast!
YOUR RECENT REQUESTS
Some of the issues and or requests which residents of the Shire have bought to my attention recently include:
- Annoying barking dogs at night in Blackall
- Stray cats roaming the streets
- Cost of registering additional dogs with Council
- Kerbing and channelling requests
- Dust suppression at the corner of Rose and Salvia Streets – Blackall
- Painting of cement triangles at the pedestrian crossing near the State School
- Broken glass at the skate park – Blackall
- Insufficient information contained in Council minutes
I will continue to address these concerns with Council and action items.
